What NOT to Put in a Storage Unit

Common Storage Mistakes to Avoid

Renting a storage unit is a great way to free up space, protect your gear, and stay organized, but not everything belongs inside your unit. At Ontario Mini Storage in Pulaski, we work hard to keep our facility clean, safe, and secure for every customer. That means following a few important rules about what shouldn't be stored.

Whether you're new to self storage or just need a refresher, here’s a list of prohibited items, along with safer alternatives to help you avoid damage, legal trouble, or unwanted pests.

1. Perishable Food or Animal Products

No meats, dairy, produce, or anything that can rot, even if it's in a sealed package.

Why it’s a problem: Perishables attract pests, produce strong odors, and can lead to mold and bacteria growth.
Safe alternative: Canned goods or dry, sealed items can be stored at home in airtight bins or pantry spaces.

2. Flammable, Explosive, or Hazardous Materials

This includes gasoline, propane tanks, fireworks, paint thinner, cleaning solvents, and any type of fuel.

Why it’s a problem: These materials are dangerous in enclosed spaces and violate fire safety laws.
Safe alternative: Store empty fuel containers only, or keep hazardous items in approved containers at home, away from heat sources.

3. Live Animals or Plants

It may seem obvious, but no living things of any kind—no pets, no potted plants, no aquariums.

Why it’s a problem: Storage units aren’t ventilated for living beings, and leaving them inside is not only dangerous—it’s illegal.
Safe alternative: Use proper pet boarding or plant nurseries if you’re temporarily relocating.

4. Weapons, Ammunition, or Illegal Items

This includes firearms, ammunition, or anything prohibited by local, state, or federal law.

Why it’s a problem: It’s a liability for both you and the facility. Firearms require specific, legal storage solutions that comply with gun safety regulations.
Safe alternative: Consider a gun safe at home or consult a licensed gun storage facility.

5. Unregistered or Inoperable Vehicles

If you're storing a car, truck, boat, or RV, it must be operable and properly registered.

Why it’s a problem: Storing abandoned or non-running vehicles can lead to legal and environmental issues.
Safe alternative: Ontario Mini Storage offers secure outdoor parking—just make sure your registration and insurance are current.

6. Strong-Smelling Items

This includes scented candles, open detergent bottles, essential oils, or anything with a powerful aroma.

Why it’s a problem: Strong smells can attract pests and affect neighboring units.
Safe alternative: Keep scented items tightly sealed and in containers that won't spill or leak.

7. Cash, Jewelry, and Irreplaceable Valuables

While we offer secure storage, high-value or irreplaceable items are best kept in a safe or bank deposit box.

Why it’s a problem: Theft is rare, but in the event of a disaster, these items aren’t easily replaced—even with tenant protection plans.
Safe alternative: Store valuable documents and heirlooms in secure, climate-controlled safes or vaults.
